What are the different types of Ready Mix Concrete (RMC) used in the construction industry?

Ready Mix Concrete (RMC)

Ready Mix Concrete (RMC) is a type of concrete that’s specifically mixed at a central plant and transported to the construction site instead of being mixed at the construction site itself. Every batch of RMC is custom made as per the requirements of the customer. The custom made concrete is then delivered to the construction site in rotating drum mixers that are mounted on trucks.

RMC is usually remixed once it arrives at the construction site in order to get the desired slump. However, concrete that has been remixed is prone to set more rapidly compared to the concrete that has been mixed only once. In such cases, water and admixtures are added to the concrete at the construction site to make sure the required properties are met.

Types of Ready Mix Concrete (RMC)

Based on the mixing of various ingredients, Ready Mix Concrete (RMC) is classified into three types.

(1) Transit mixed Concrete:

This is also known as Truck mixed concrete since all the ingredients are batched at a central plant and are completely mixed in the drum mounted truck during the transit. This kind of transit-mixing keeps the water separate from the cement and aggregates and facilitates the concrete to be mixed right before the placement at the construction site.

One major disadvantage of transit mixed concrete is cement balling.

(2) Shrink mixed concrete:

The concrete is partially mixed at the central plant and then discharged into the rotating drum of the truck where the rest of the mixing gets done. A stationary, plant-mounted mixer at the central plant is usually used to partially mix the concrete to reduce or shrink the volume of the mixture, hence the name shrink mixed concrete.

Shrink mixed concrete is often used to increase the truck’s load capacity and yet retain the advantages of transit mixed concrete.

(3) Central mixed concrete:

Ingredients are blended by a stationary mixer before getting discharged into the truck mixer. The truck mixer is used to stir the water and the ingredients when the concrete is centrally mixed.

Central mixed concrete usually helps in speeding up the batching process and reduce the wear and tear of the rotating drum mixers mounted on the trucks. On the flip side, central mix plants are usually more expensive to purchase and maintain compared to transit mixed plants.
